The National Reserve Bank of Tonga (Reserve Bank) was established on 1 July 1989 as the central bank of Tonga.
The principal objectives of the Reserve Bank shall be to maintain internal and external monetary stability, promote financial stability and promote a sound and efficient financial system. The Reserve Bank shall conduct its activities in a manner that supports macroeconomic stability and economic growth.

Foreign Reserves Statistics for February 2024

Tonga's official foreign reserves decreased over the month by $3.2 million to $891.4 million, equivalent to 11.4 months of imports, and remains above the IMF's recommended threshold of 7.5 months. The decline in foreign reserves was attributed mainly to higher import payments. This also marks a $19.7 million decline in foreign reserves compared to a year ago.

We at the Reserve Bank are deeply concerned with the involvement in drugs by one of our senior officers. He was arrested by the Police last weekend, and has been in custody since, and the Police investigations are ongoing, with our full support and cooperation.

The primary sector demonstrated mixed performances in September 2023. Growth in the industrial sector over the month is buoyed largely by construction activities. Indicators in the tertiary sector showed a slowdown over the month. The Reserve Bank will continue to closely monitor inflation movements and at the same time support economic recovery.

The National Reserve Bank of Tonga wishes to inform the general public that the licence granted under the name of “Maka Moúi Trading Services & Financial Institutions Limited” to act as a foreign exchange dealer (License Type A) has been cancelled and is no longer authorised to conduct foreign exchange business.

NRBT Launches the 2023 New Polymer and Paper Banknote Series

The National Reserve Bank of Tonga (NRBT) will launch Tonga’s latest series of banknotes on Monday 4th December 2023 to commemorate the birthday of the Kingdom’s moderniser King Tupou I. His Royal Highness Prince Ata will be the Guest of Honour for the occassion at 11:00am on Monday at the Fa’onelua Convention Centre in Nuku’alofa. The new currency series was developed under the authority of the Privy Council in partnership with De La Rue, an international renowned banknote manufacturer.
Trading in Investment Banking Without a Licence

The National Reserve Bank of Tonga (NRBT) has officially identified and taken action against the entity operating under the name "Famili Tonga USA Trading" for engaging without a licence in investment activities confirmed as a banking business. This entity has been found to operate without a requisite banking license, a contravention of section 7 of the Banking Act 2020.

The public is advised that businesses and individuals offering money lending services must have a valid license issued by the Reserve Bank under the Moneylenders Act 2018. Reserve Bank clarifies banking business

The Reserve Bank confirms that business such as investment activities, whereby funds are received from the public to be used for investments or loans at the risk of the person doing such business, is considered banking business. These activities are permitted to be conducted in Tonga only by those who have a banking licence granted by the Reserve Bank under section 7 of the Banking Act 2020.

Lower Inflation Remains Priority for the Reserve Bank August 2023 MPS
