The Reserve Bank is pleased to announce the Government appointment of Tatafu Moeaki on 20 December 2022 as the new Reserve Bank Governor. The appointment is made in accordance with Section 11 of the National Reserve Bank Act following an open recruitment process and recommendations by the Hon. Tiofilusi Tiueti, Minister of Finance in consultation with the Board of the Reserve Bank.

A fundamental objective of the Transaction Reporting Authority (TRA), Tonga’s financial intelligence unit (FIU) at the National Reserve Bank of Tonga (NRBT), is to develop and disseminate quality intelligence products to its domestic and international counterparts.

The Reserve Bank is hereby issuing Directive No. 3 that supersedes Directive No. 2 issued on the 22nd November 2021 that the following entities are exempted from the Moneylenders Act:

The National Reserve Bank of Tonga’s Board of Directors, at its board meeting on the 24 August 2022, approved to retain its current accommodative monetary policy stance, while working in tandem with the Government to support economic recovery and macroeconomic stability.

His Royal Highness Crown Prince Tupouto’a ‘Ulukalala launched the Domestic Electronic Payment System (DEPS) marking the beginning of the progressive move towards digitalization of the payment system. The launching of the DEPS also coincided with the NRBT’s 33rd Anniversary on July 1, 2022.

At a meeting of South Pacific Central Bank Governors on 20 June 2022, the Governors reconfirmed their commitment to supporting the region’s access to cost effective remittances, retention of bank services and improving financial inclusion.

Please be advised that the Only Authorized Persons to provide foreign exchange services to the public have obtained a valid license by the Reserve Bank.
