Exchange Control Directive

Exchange Control covers the regulation of foreign exchange transactions between Tonga and the rest of the world including dealings in gold or foreign exchange or foreign securities.

Effective June 2023.

This is to support the maintenance of the Kingdom’s Foreign Reserves, and matters connected therewith.

Exchange Control is one of the tools used by the Reserve Bank for the implementation of monetary policy and management of foreign reserves. Its primary objective is to ensure that Tonga has a comfortable level of foreign reserves to meet the country’s foreign currency obligations and support macro-economic stability.
