Warning Notice: Beware of Cryptocurrency Investment Scam “BG Wealth Sharing/DSJEX”

The National Reserve Bank of Tonga (NRBT) has been alerted of an investment scheme circulated primarily on Facebook. This involves a fraudulent investment trading platform called “BG Wealth Sharing/DSJEX” which impersonates a legitimate cryptocurrency trading service. This investment scam aims to deceive individuals, including the Tongan diaspora in Tonga, New Zealand, Australia, and abroad.

What is Cryptocurrency?

  • A type of digital currency that exists electronically and stored in a digital wallet
  • Examples include Bitcoin, Ether etc.
  • Can be bought through an exchange, app, website, or cryptocurrency ATM or earned through a mining process.

Risks of Cryptocurrency Scams

  • Cryptocurrency payments have no legal protections. The National Reserve Bank cannot step in to help you get your money back.
  • Cryptocurrency payments are not reversible.
  • Cryptocurrency values change constantly.

Common Investment Scams

  • Fake Platforms and False Profits: Victims are directed to use specific trading platforms controlled entirely by scammers. These platforms mimic legitimacy, sometimes showing fake real-time data and generating fabricated account statements that display impressive but false profits. Scammers often lure victims by promising free cash or cryptocurrency. Remember, any promise of “free money” is a red flag and likely a scam.
  • Pressure to Invest More: After showing fake profits, scammers pressure victims to invest increasingly larger sums, deepening the financial harm.
  • Withdrawal Issues: Victims who try to withdraw their funds or supposed profits are blocked. Scammers then demand additional “taxes” or “withdrawal fees” before releasing money —but paying these fees never results in actual withdrawals.

Protect your savings and hard earned money:

The NRBT urges the public to be vigilant and protect their funds from such scams. The NRBT remains dedicated to protecting financial consumers and maintaining the integrity of Tonga’s financial system.
